Are Indian cities future-ready for citizens?
India's urban population is set to double over the next 25-30 years. Putting population strain on the current developed cities in India.
At present, Indian cities account for 60% of our countries GDP by utilizing just 3% of nation's land.
Are Indian cities equipped with adequate infrastructure be it roads or public transport? Are the cities ready to sustain the population stress that will be put on them after two/three decades? Are the cities smart enough to cater public needs?
The answer to these questions is not just limited to providing more of everything: more buses, more trains, more houses, more roads or vehicles. The cities need to grow in a way that they full-fill the aspirations of growing smart citizens.

Planning - Policy - Technology cycle |
Planning - Policy - Technology cycle for city's development
The interdependence of planning, policy, and technology is crucial for the development of Indian cities, considering the complex challenges they face such as rapid urbanization, infrastructure deficits, environmental degradation, and social inequalities.
Planning
Policy
Government policies provide the framework within which planning initiatives are executed. These policies guide decision-making processes, resource allocation, and implementation strategies. Effective policies can encourage private sector participation, promote innovation, and ensure equitable development across urban areas. Alignment between policies and planning goals is critical for addressing urban challenges and achieving sustainable urban development.
Technology
Technology plays a transformative role in urban development by offering innovative solutions to urban challenges. It can improve infrastructure management, enhance service delivery, and promote citizen engagement. Technologies such as renewable energy, waste management systems, and green building practices contribute to environmental sustainability. Integration of appropriate technologies into urban planning and policy frameworks can enhance the efficiency, resilience, and livability of Indian cities.
Conclusion
Effective planning provides the foundation for policy formulation and technological interventions, while policies create an enabling environment for planning initiatives and technological innovations. At the same time, technology informs planning decisions and policy outcomes through data-driven insights and real-time monitoring.
